Autumn Remembrance

Curse of The Golden Flower is an epic extravaganza, filled with great visuals and a stellar cast that doesn't disappoint - except for Jay Chou.

The story is based on Mu Shui's favourite movie, Lei Yu. It's a story of incest (accidental and non-accidental), jealousy, and power. No expenses were spared as the palace is wonderfully decorated and setup with details and colours.

Chow Yun-Fatt puts in a sinister and evil performance as the Emperor, while Gong Li is more than a match for Chow with her seasoned acting. Against the heavyweights, Jay Chou pales in comparison. In fact, his acting was much better in Initial D. There were moments where the audience were about to burst into laughter when Prince Jie (Jay Chou) had a heart-to-heart-talk with the Empress. Jay looks forced and unnatural. Much like his 7th album Still Fantasy, the ending song, Ju Hua Tai, was a song of redemption. A piece of poetic lyrics and a competent tune results in a fantastic song only made better with Jay Chou shedding the RnB-style of slurring, then replacing it with his once in a blue moon crystal-clear voice.

The ending looks undecided on the outside, but it actually leaves you thinking, only for you to realise that it is the ending. Curse is not your typical Wu Xia film. It is a gripping drama that never let go, and is a great drama of incest, love and struggles within an imperial family.
